hollywood prefers a movie about "dis•arming" bombs" (THE HURT LOCKER-Best Picture 2010) over a film about how well we can "bomb paradise to smithereens" (AVATAR-Highest-Grossing-Film-Ever)

I guess the irony is that "popular" is politically contemptible, while the "academy's choice" is meant to be  synonymous with "politically correct". Even though, or perhaps because of the low viewer turn out.
